Folliculina boltoni in periphyton of Lake Baikal and review of freshwater folliculinids (Ciliophora, Spirotricha)

In 1996 in the Saratov reservoir (the Volga fiver part) Zharikov described "for the first time" a species of the Folliculinidae family, identified as south-American Diafoiliculina thomseni. Actually, this is not the first record, and identification of the found species is incorrect. The species found in the Volga is the boreal species Folliculina boltoni Kent, 1881, described at the base of crustose sponges (Jankowski, 1982) and on some other substrates in Lake Baikal. A review of Folliculinidae species and genera in fresh waters of the world is given. Problems of systematics of this poorly known group, the status of Ascobius Henneguy, 1884 in particular, are discussed. Probable ancestors of the freshwatar species F. boltoni are the marine species F. simplex and F. sileni.
