Ptychoptera imagos have paired oesophageal nerves and paired corpora cardiaca - corpora allata complexes. The following specific features are characteristic of the Ptychoptera postcerebral complex: division of the nervi corporis cardiaci into dorsal and ventral branches and existence of an unpaired neurohaemal organ that stores neurosecretory material of corpora cardiaca secretory cells. The cerebral neurosecretory material accumulates mainly in ventral branches of the nervi corporis cardiaci that fuse with the corresponding oesophageal nerves. In their basal plan, cerebral endocrine organs of Ptychoptera are similar to those of Tipulidae. In Bibio marci imagos, as well as in its larvae, one oesophageal nerve was found, but the corpora cardiaca are paired. This feature differs Bibio from the other Bibionomorpha members studied.
