Relation between localization and occulusion effect by ear-plug type earphones

This paper discusses a relation between the localization and the occulusion effect by ear-plug type earphones. First, we designed and manufactured an earphone to compare with ER-6 (Star). The earphone has a same ear-plug as one of ER-6. However, the ear canal is leaked by a hole in the earphone and the occlusion effect is decreased. Next, relations among occlusion effect, HRTF and localization were studied by loudness-balance method. From the results, it can be found that, for localization, decreasing occulusion effect is effective especially in 1 kHz or less, and adjusting each personal HRTF is effective especially on midsagitalplane.
