Sound field control of 3D sound synthesis using the binaural principle

Binaural synthesis over loudspeakers, also known as cross-talk cancellation process, has been known as a means of 3D sound reproduction. However, its inherent problems such as loss of dynamic range, deterioration of control performance by small errors has prevented its potentially much broader range of use due to often inferior sound quality as well as only moderately superior spatial quality. Recent papers revealed that the fundamental physics of the spatial aspects of reproduction system ultimately dictates the performance of such binaural sound field control. In this paper, the superior characteristics of the Optimal Source Distribution ("OSD") system, which overcomes problems associated with binaural synthesis by means of variable transducer span, has been demonstrated through the analysis of binaural sound control process in the time domain.
