Peer alliance: probing the Internet for world wide database - example of sharing WEB bookmarks via QUILT queries

Recently, much attention has been paid on the possibility of peer-computing as distributed computing paradigm over the Internet. In this paper, we propose Peer Alliance, that is a new paradigm in which peers form alliances, and work cooperatively for information sharing among individual users. Peer searches other peers to connect with each other in a bottom-up fashion to solve their requests. We extend the common basic understanding of peer-computing, and give the Structure of peers, and two types of connections to obtain information from broader world. Peer alliance is a framework that can be utilized in various fields related to the Internet. We also discuss an example of sharing web bookmarks among peer hosts, using XQuery-based QUILT queries. In the example, views defined by QUILT work as an interface of peers in this paradigm.
