Interspecies cytogenetic differentiation of two sibling species of the plumosus group, C. plumosus and C. balatonicus, were studied. It was shown that the cytogenetic divergence of these species was not completed. Five of 59 banding sequences contributing to the combined karyological composition of these sibling species were revealed in the chromosomal arms and found to be homologous. The homologous banding sequences were detected in only three of seven chromosomal arms (E, F, and G) of the C. plumosus and C. balatonicus karyotypes. The cytogenetic distance between the populations of C. plumosus and C. balatonicus was 1.205?.008, which is considerably higher than the cytogenetic distances between the intraspecific populations of each of these sibling species (0.164 in C. plumosus and 0.047 in C. balatonicus). The degree of cytogenetic differentiation of the sibling species C. plumosus and C. balatonicus was primarily determined by the number of chromosomal arms of the karyotype, where the species-specific banding sequences are located, rather than by the number of these banding sequences in their karyological compositions.
