Electric power systems using gas turbines as the main engines have traditionally been employed to meet peak electricity demand. The performance of a gas turbine declines as the turbine inlet air temperature increases. This is because as the inletair temperature rises, the amount of inlet air is decreased, resulting in a lower fuel flow rate and limitation of the combustion gas temperature. As a consequence, the capacity of the gas turbines of summer peaking electric utilities is lowest when theneed for them is highest. Methods of improving this situation are therefore required in order to secure reliable electricity supplies as the most important foundation of society.This paper introduces a gas turbine inlet air cooling system using ice storage equipment.
