Characteristics of a multiline rice variety composed of blast resistant isogenic lines (Koshihikari BL) bred in Niigata, Japan, were evaluated and compared with those of the original Koshihikari variety in terms of similarity of agronomic character, blast resistance and DNA fingerprint pattern. No significant differences were found in heading date, maturing date, culm length, ear length, number of panicles, lodging degree, grain yield, 1000-grain wt., grain quality, overall eating quality, mido value and protein content of brown rice. However, the multiline variety was clearly superior to var. Koshihikari in resistance to panical blast. These findings indicate that the multiline variety does not differ from var. Koshihikari in agronomic characteristics, and can be grown with reduced use of pesticides. In the DNA fingerprint analysis, the number of DNA bands was 5 for the multiline variety but 3 for var. Koshihikari, indicating that this is a useful technique for distinguishing between the multiline variety and var. Koshihikari.
