A study was conducted to determine the effect of thermophile garbage compost on the growth and seed yield of soyabean and the nutrient leaching losses from the soil in comparison with chemical fertilizer. Thermophile garbage compost was applied in pots and the field before sowing of soyabean. The amounts of compost application were adjusted as it contained the same (1-T), 2 times (2-T) and 10 times (10-T) of total N compared with that of chemical fertilizer. The NO3-N and K leached from the soil were significantly lower in 1-T and 2-T, and approximately the same even in 10-T, compared with that of chemical fertilizer-applied soil. However, the compost application had no effect on the leaching of P and total electrical conductivity. Soyabean plant growth was not affected by the compost application until flowering stage. However, the pod number, seed number and seed weight increased in 1-T and 10-T at harvest time. This suggest that the compost fertilizer could supply N to the plants, especially at the late growth stage. It is considered that thermophile garbage compost is not only effective for preventing the nutrient leaching but also suitable as a fertilizer in soyabean cultivation.
