Ecological and biological characteristics of the seeds of two species of Empetrum (Empetraceae). I. Quality and viability of seeds.

Qualitative and quantitative seed characteristics were determined for Empetrum nigrum and E. hermaphroditum gathered in 1991-95 from north-west Russia. Differences between species for some quantitative parameters (number of seeds per berry and seedweight) were not significant. Seed colour was apparently correlated with colour of the berry flesh. In both species seeds did not germinate without special treatment. The viability of seeds was influenced by species, geographical location of plants and meteorological conditions.
