Born in Hong Kong, Rick Jolly was schooled in the Far East and in England at Stonyhurst before qualifying at St Bart’s Medical School in 1969. He joined the Royal Navy and underwent Commando training in 1972, after which he served as a Medical Officer with the Royal Marines, along with periods with the Fleet Air Arm and as a Medical Officer at Britannia Royal Naval College (BRNC) Dartmouth. Initially he worked with 42 Commando in Belfast (along with the 3rd Battalion Parachute Regiment) and in the Plymouth area where, by the early 1980s, he was appointed Officer Commanding Medical Squadron, Commando Logistic Regiment, Royal Marines, and Medical Adviser to 3 Commando Brigade.
