This issue of JASH begins with a review of intracrine function by Dr. Richard Re. These intracellular messengers are involved in transmission of information between cells and organs. The review focuses on receptor-mediated functions of these substances and provides great insight into our current understanding of the mechanisms by which this information is transmitted, as well as providing knowledge relevant to both pathophysiology and treatment of cardiovascular disorders. A second review, by Dr. Cacciapuoti, extends this knowledge to the development, treatment, and potentially to the prevention of left ventricular hypertrophy by reviewing the factors responsible. This disorder is a frequent concomitant of elevated blood pressure as well as being a major harbinger of congestive heart failure.
