Hydrangeas are beautiful shrubs that grace many gardens in the UK. They are easy to grow and can provide a variety of flower head shapes and colours. Trends in breeding have led to compact varieties that do well at point of sale but not necessarily inthe garden. However, there are many excellent garden or pot performers as well as varieties that repeat flower and also change colour through the flowering season.It is a large genus of 100 species. They are deciduous or evergreen shrubs as well as small trees and climbers. Generally, they have large rounded-ovate toothed leaves and large flower heads. These can either be mophead (H. macrophylla), made up of all ray florets; lacecap (H. serrata), with small florets in the centre surrounded by larger ray florets; or paniculate (H. paniculata). They are all long-lasting and come in shades of white, blue or pink.
