The clear message to display with these cormous perennials is "Colchicums: plant now". "Delightful", "Ridiculously easy to grow" and "Fun" are other phrases that go well with what are best described asautumn wonders.A genus of around 160 species in the family Colchicaceae, these flowering plants, which grow from corms, are native to west Asia, Europe, parts of the Mediterranean coast, east and south African coasts and the Western Cape. Looking similar to and often confused with but not related to crocus, Colchicum have their ovaries underground. The styles—three in Colchicum but six in crocus—are long and can extend up to 10cm or more.
