US President Donald Trump's whole-hearted embrace of fossil fuels has given the natural gas industry something it lacked during the Obama administration: A champion in the White House. The Trump administration's oft-stated goal of achieving US "energy dominance" resonates with the gas industry at a time when supply is expected to skyrocket. The strategy is loosely aimed at ramping up production to the maximum possible and promoting LNG exports. But in the 12 months since Trump's inauguration, policy has lately consisted of cutting regulatory red tape for the oil and gas industry and broadening access to federal land and waters for drilling. Efforts to unwind former president Barack Obama's environmental policy have met with legal setbacks, and Trump's desire to reinvigorate the US coal industry has created tensions with natural gas interests (WGI Jan.3'18).
