In the 1976 movie Marathon Man, that was the question that Sir Laurence Olivier repeatedly posed to Dustin Hoffman as he drilled into his teeth without anesthetic. Hoffman's character, "Babe" Levy, suffered the pain longer than he should have simply because he didn't have a clue what the correct answer was!When we are asked the same question about air medical transport operations, we nearly always assert with confidence that what we do every day is very safe. We have preflight risk assessment tools, safety officers, safety conferences, safety stand-down days, safety committees, safety education, risk management programs, Just Culture, and safety audits all rolled together into a monolithic Safety Management System (SMS).
