Jonathan Whitlam looks back at the history of the safety cab. From 1 September 1970 all tractors sold in Britain were required by law to be fitted with an approved safety cab, as per the Agriculture (Tractor Cabs)Regulations passed in 1967. This act was put together in direct response to the growing number of deaths due to farm tractors rolling over and crushing the driver. Tractors sold before that date were not affected and were not required to be fitted with an approved safety cab until 1 September 1977, giving farmers time to get older machines equipped. Only approved safety cabs or safety frames that had passed stringent rollover and load-bearing testing were approved for use, thus giving tractor manufacturers only three years to design and build suitable safety cabs for fitting to their products. Without doing so they would not be able to sell their tractors on the UK market.
