State personal income, which is measured in current dollars, grew 1.0 percent on average in the first quarter of 2017, up from 0.3 percent in the fourth quarter of 2016 (chart 1). The acceleration reflects a first-quarter increase in personal income in Texas and in 20 other states in which personal income declined in the fourth quarter of 2016 (table A). It also reflects an acceleration in personal income growth in 26 states, including California, Florida, and New York. First-quarter growth rates ranged from -0.1 percent in Nebraska to 1.6 percent in Idaho. Price inflation, as measured by the national price index for personal consumption expenditures, was 0.6 percent in the first quarter, up slightly from 0.5 percent in the fourth quarter.
