Development of a Bulk Type Bi-Directional Optical Module with a Glass Ferrule Containing a WDM Filter - by Masaki Furumai, Kazunori Yoshida, Manabu Shiozaki, Manabu Yoshimura, Kazuhito Saito and Hitoshi Terauchi-Sumitomo Electric has successfully developed a new design of bi-directional optical module using a glass ferrule. This module is easy for fiber assembly, and easy to carry in the SFF data-link because of its compact size. By using a 1.31μm cut filter, the authors realized a minimum receiving sensitivity of -36.0 dBm when the optical fiber output is +3 dBm and during simultaneous transmitting and receiving mode. This module achieves high performance under wide temperature range operation, and is applicable to 155.52 Mb/s optical communications.
