Development of HFC Network Shared Equipment for Power Distribution Automation Systems - by Takamichi Fujisawa, Shinichi Kishio, Hiroyuki Nonaka, Tetsuji Matsuike, Kikaku Tokumaru, Takefumi Shimoguchi and Yukio Honda - Based on Kansai ElectricPower Co.'s integrated automated power distribution concept and assuming information and communications technology to be paramount, Sumitomo Electric has conducted a study of transmission capacity, the limitations of reliability and multi-purpose use, and future technological progress of various transmission systems (optical, coaxial, pair, and distribution line carrier). The transmission paths which constitute a power distribution automation system are likely to undergo innovative technical progress inthe future, and the optimal transmission media will need to be selected based on a clear understanding of the computerization needs of different regions. Recently the main focus of interest has been the Internet, video-on-demand, and other bidirectionalmulti-channel multimedia services based on urban CATV systems. This has led to a rapid expansion in the construction of hybrid fiber/coax (HFC) networks, in place of conventional coaxial and pair transmission paths. To ensure the effective use of existing equipment, the authors have studied and evaluated transmission equipment for connecting HFC networks and the equipment and transmission paths for the communication line systems used in conventional power distribution automation systems (i.e. ,coaxialcable, excluding distribution line carrier, pair cable and other transmission media). This paper reports on the details.
