Necessity is the mother of all invention, goes the old saying. The need to increase production from western Canada's 30 billion barrels of heavy oil in place in eastern Alberta and western Saskatchewan is driving a lot of inventive schemes in recent years. Operators are using a mix of thermal technologies, polymer floods and even CO2 floods to capture more of the massive heavy oil resource.
