WAI is a well-respected consulting engineering firm established in 1949 with headquarters in NYC and division offices in major US cities. The firm maintains a staff of more than 240 professional engineers, technicians and support personnel. Weidlinger initially had approached three composites manufacturers for information and comment on a performance specification and was disappointed that they did not get sufficient information from the composites industry to complete the specification. The MDA proposed composites and contractor ideas. WAI asked SP Technologies in the UK lo consult on design and then found several composites bidders. SP Technologies was brought on to the project in late 2000 and has since worked with Weidlinger on the specification for these fairings. The local details were also evaluated at SPT by Finite Element Analysis to ensure that the local stress concentrations did not cause fatigue problems. The alternative material was aluminum with steel connections, but the design concern was corrosion, and higher weight. Steel would have been twice the weight and corroded as well.
