DANCE ON A VOLCANO:

Our first glimpse of Bagana volcano was an ominous silhouette just visible through the dense rainforest covering the shore to our left. As our boat sped round the headland into a wide sweeping bay, the volcano was laid bare before us, rearing high above the coastal plains. I was in Papua New Guinea as part of an international team making a month- long survey of gas emissions from several little-studied but highly active volcanoes. Bagana, located on remote Bougainville Island, is one of the world's preeminent sources of volcanic gas emissions and somewhere I had long wanted to visit.
