Land of plenty

As with a number of otheravocado-growing countries, Israel's productionis booming. Planted area has risen from 7,OOOha in 2013 to 9,600ha by the end of 2018 with another l.oooha planned for 2019. Total production for the 2018/19 season was about 108,000 tonnes of which 65 per cent (70,000 tonnes) was exported.The main production areas are the Upper and Western Galilee, the Jordan Valley, the Hefer Valley and around Rehovot (south of Tel Aviv). Western Galilee is ideally suited for avocado cultivation because of its proximity to Israel's coastline, a fact that tempers the very hot summer weather.
