Increasing hydropower generation in China has squeezed thermal power generation, which is weighing on coal demand and domestic Chinese prices. A major coal-fired power plant in south China's Guangxi province is running at just around 20pc of its installed power capacity, an official at the utility said on 12 July. This was down sharply from an operating rate of 75pc last month before the steep rise in hydropower output in the province.
