US coal could fall below 500mn t by 2028: Fitch

US coal production could fall by nearly 200mn metric tonnes through 2028 as domestic thermal coal demand continues to sink, analysts at Fitch Solutions Macro Research said. The research frm said it expects coal production to slip by just 0.7pc, or 4.83mn t, this year to 679.6mn t. Decreases will remain minimal over the following three years, falling by no more than 1.2pc a year to 653.6mn t in 2022.
