Eighty years ago, scientists first discovered homogeneously catalyzed carbonization processes.Since then, researchers have been searching for what they call a”dream reaction”that would enable a more environmentally friendly,atom-economical production of adipate diesters-a starting material for the manufacture of lubricants and other consumer products.A team of researchers led by scientists at Evonik and LIKAT recently succeeded in double carbonylating the starting material 1,3-butadiene directly to produce adipates. This highly selective, efficient and long-lived catalyst can result in 95% yields of adipic acid derivatives under industrially feasible conditions.
