The Norwegian Maritime Authority(NMA)has determined that an engine failure on the Viking Sky cruise ship this past March was directly caused by low oil pressure. While the level of lubrication oil was within set limits, heavy seas caused movement in the tanks so extreme that the supply to lubricating oil pumps stopped. That stoppage triggered an alarm, which caused an automatic shutdown of the engines. The NMA has since drawn up a general safety notice about ensuring a continuous supply of lubricating oil to engines and other critical systems in poor weather conditions.
