BHP’s Minera Escondida has reportedly made a final offer to the union representingworkers at the mine. We understand that the offer includes a signing bonus of $27,500 (CLP18 M) and a 1.5% real wage increase. The union had rejected the company’s initial offer ofa $23,000 bonus per worker and a salary adjustment linked to inflation, describing theproposal as unacceptable. The union was seeking a 5% increase in salaries and a bonusworth between $33,500 and $36,000 per worker and has prepared a $400,000 emergencyfund to support workers if they opt to down tools. An additional one off loan for some workersin exchange for the ending of a housing benefit is a further point of contention. A 44-daystrike in February and March last year severely dented Escondida’s production.
