When my long-suffering postman handed over the weighty (2.4kg) package containing the A4 format book under review I eagerly unwrapped it. After a cursory examination, I immediately thought of the Willie Dixon song 'You can't always judge a book by its cover' that gave the R&B legend Bo Diddly a hit single in 1962, because the rather characterless book cover design conceals a richly illustrated and comprehensible account of 20th century architecture.
