You've spent your entire working life outdoors -sliding across the yard on a wet and muddy dawn; doing bittersweet all-nighters with a flask of coffee (or something stronger) in the lambing shed; keeping pace with the combine during deafening, dusty, satisfying afternoons. Now your days are metred out in very different ways. The schedule set not by nature but by bus timetables, GP appointments, shop opening hours. Life is easier, cleaner (!)... but disconnected. For many older men, who to all appearances have transitioned well to life in retirement, separation from the countryside may leave a vacuum that they rarely talk about - not least because in this new environment it's hard to find anyone who can identifywith what they've lost.
