Thuja species and Cupressus nootkatensis - Exploration as Species for Bonsai CultureEastern or northern white cedar, Thuja occidentalis, is the most recognizable in the U.S. bonsai community as several are shown in each bi-annual National exhibit in Rochester, NY. Thuja oc-cidentalis is native to an area in the southern part of easternCanada and the adjacent part of the United States including the Michigan upper peninsula, northern Minnesota and Wisconsin, northern New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. It is a small or medium-sized tree growing to a height of 49 ft/15 m with atrunk diameter of 3 ft/0.9 m. The bark is red brown, furrowed and peels in narrow, longitudinal strips. It has characteristic fan like foliage in flat sprays with scale likeneedles/leaves. The branches can take root if the tree falls.
