摘要

The algal-extractive cosmetic product, "TOWADA" was fractionated into low- and high-molecular weight fraction (LMWF, HMWF) and their preventive and therapeutic effects on aging of skin were evaluated using UVB-induced skin-aging model of hairless mice. The mice treated with HMWF showed an obvious improvement of wrinkle grade, increase of skin elasticity, decrease of epidermal thickness, and recovery of skin collagen content compared with the mice treated with the vehicle. It is known that skin-aging by UVB is caused partly b reduced collagen synthesis and connective tissue damage, and that transforming growth factor-#beta#1 (TGF-#beta#1) is an important factor for maintaining normal metabolism of dermal extracellular matrix. Our experiments proved that HMWF but practically not LMWF had a significant effect on increasing the production of type I pro-collagen and TGF-#beta#1 by the normal skin fibroblasts. The results indicate that the effective ingredient(s) exists in HMWF, and that the increased type I pro-collagen and TGF-#beta#1 in the skin treated with HMWF reverse the process of UVB-induced skinaging. It is highly possible that fucoidan which is the main component of HMWF is one of the effective ingredient(s).
