US July coal exports seen 27% down on year

United States July coal exports are expected to fall by up to 27% on the year, according to IHS Markit Commodities at Sea (CAS) data analysed by Doyle Trading Consultants. CAS data show US exports for July will be below 6.0 mt compared to 7.5 mt in June and 8.4 mt in May. CAS data also showed 8.2 mt of seaborne exports in July last year. The CAS data, which is based on ship departures in the course of the month, point to a large drop in official statistics from the Commerce Department for July, which will be released in September. Around half of the hefty year-on-year drop can be attributed to shorter-term issues, notably planned maintenance at piers on the Chesapeake Bay and weather-related delays.
