Schlumberger Sells WesternGeco Seismic Assets

Oil-field services giant Schlumberger has agreed to sell the marine seismic acquisition assets and operations of its WesternGeco unit, making good on plans laid out early this year to move into a more asset-light model for the business (IOD Jan.22’18). Oslo-based Shearwater GeoServices will pay Schlumberger $600 million for the assets. Schlumberger will also take a 15% stake in the company after closing, which is expected in the fourth quarter of this year. Shearwater will receive 10 high-end seismic acquisition vessels, including seven 3-D vessels and three multipurpose vessels, among other assets. The transaction will also include WesternGeco’s proprietary marine seismic technology as well as development and manufacturing facilities in Norway and Malaysia.
