Rare earth basic nitrate hydrates (LnBN) of the general formula [Ln_6(mu_6-O)(mu_3-OH)_8(H_2O)_(12)(eta~2-NO_3)_6](NO_3)_2 centre dot xH_2O(N03), (Ln=Y,Sm,Eu,Gd.Tb,Dy,Ho,Er,Tm,Yb,Lu;x = 3,4,5,6)exist at least in seven different struc?ture types (A'-D). The present paper describes and discusses their synthesis and structure determination. The basal building unit, common to all these compounds, is a [Ln_6(mu_6-O)(mu_3-OH)_8(H_2O)_(12)(eta~2-NO_3)_6]~(2+) cluster of idealized symmetry -32/m. The stoichiometry is completed by non-coordinated (NO_3)~(1-) anions and H_2O molecules in interstices.
