ANTIMICROBIAL resistance poses a "catastrophic threat" to society, according to chief medical officer Dame Sally Davies. Dame Sally is calling for global action to tackle the problem, which she said could lead to deaths following minor surgery in just 20 years. She would like antimicrobial resistance to be included on the national risk register and taken seriously by politicians at an international level. Her comments come as the second volume of her annual report is published, which addresses the threat of antimicrobial resistance and infectious diseases (see Panel).
