Probiotics and antibiotic-associated diarrhoea

Stephen Allen and colleagues report findings of the PLACIDE randomised trial (Oct 12, p 1249)/ in whiA a multistrain probiotic preparation of lactobacilli and bifidobacteria was compared with an identical placebo for prevention of antibiotic-associated diarrhoea (AAD) and Clostridium difficile diarrhoea (CDD). The report is timely and important; however, a methodological issue needs to be addressed.
