Initial combination therapy for treatment of hypertension.

In the ACCELERATE trial, Morris Brown and colleagues showed higher rates of blood pressure control after 8 and 16 weeks of treatment in patients initially treated with a combination of aliskiren and amlodipine than in those with aliskiren alone or with amlodipine alone, respectively. However, this finding is hardly surprising. As stated in Brown and colleagues' hypothesis, the two drugs are known to have complementary mechanisms in lowering blood pressure. One would expect that drug A plus drug B would have an earlier and larger effect than drug A or drug B alone. Therefore although the trial was well designed and implemented, the results were not groundbreaking.
