Lunches at medical conferences often involve speed-eating a semi-congealed sandwich before dashing off to a poster session, but the lunch on the first day of the International Forum on Health Journalism, earlier this year, was a much grander affair. Sitting next to me at the table was Andrew Dillon, the Chief Executive of the UK's National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), and since lunch eventually finished at 5 pm, almost 3 hours after it started, I had plenty of time to quiz Dillon about his role in the organisation, which he has headed since it was launched in 1998
