Symptomatic prostatitis and urogenital infections acutely increase PSA, and may increase the long-term risk of prostate cancer and lower urinary tract symptoms. Antibiotic treatment of symptomatic infections decreases PSA. However, most patients with prostatitis symptoms do not have active infections.
