The Impact of'Organic and 'Sustainable Cotton

During my five years as chairman of the International Forum for Cotton Promotion (IFCP), I became convinced that cotton would not permanently surrender its position as the most preferred fiber to synthetics. But we do have to face some serious challenges. Lack of access to cotton, the breaching of contracts, and price volatility led to apparel manufacturers' opting to use more stable fibers. This is a serious issue warning: The chaos serves neither producers nor consumers. Natural fiber promotional campaigns encounter bizarre opposition from synthetic fiber manufacturers, who give the impression that the only environmentally friendly materials are man-made ones. Other claims are that synthetics are antibacterial, wind-stopping, and warmth-conducting, yet they are only trying to mimic the characteristics inherent to natural fibers.
