The authors report on a retrospective series of patients who underwent laparoscopic cryoablation of solid renal masses presumed to be renal cell carcinoma. The explicit goal of the study was to examine the "long-term" oncologic outcomes of laparoscopic cryoablation in a large cohort of patients. Selection criteria was limited to those with clinical stage I disease and >5 years of follow-up. Treatment logistics were consistent with best practice recommendations including a double freeze-thaw cycle and ablation under real-time sonographic guidance. To the best that one can gauge in the setting of in situ tumor ablation, progression-free survival, cancer-specific survival and overall survival were consistent with previously published reports.
