Domestic high density polyethylene demand remained strong as most US producers continued to push for a 5 cents/lb increase for May, and there was growing talk within the market that contracts will move higher, market sources said. Preliminary data released last week by the American Chemistry Council showed April domestic sales at a higher level than any month in 2014 or 2015, and multiple producer sources said business has remained steady through May. Those claims were supported by talk this week that spot availability remained limited in the US, with both domestic buyers and exporters saying that securing resin beyond normal allocations was difficult. May contracts remained unsettled, with expectations that a 5 cents/lb increase could be implemented, sources said.
