Acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene was assessed up $20/mt week on week at $1,160/mt CFR China Wednesday on the back of firmer upstream styrene monomer. Feedstock SM rose $31/mt week on week to be assessed at $931/mt FOB Korea and $954/mt CFR China Wednesday as demand emerged for stockpiling ahead of Lunar New Year holiday in February. “Since SM prices are up, producers increased their offers this week,” a market source said. Both ABS and polystyrene prices are on an uptick due to the strength of SM, another market source said. The CFR Southeast Asia ABS marker was assessed up $1/ mt week on week at $1,130/mt, rising less sharply than the CFR China marker. A weaker Malaysian ringgit was making offers from the country’s major supplier lower than from other regions, a trader based in South Korea said. The ABS production margin was estimated at $82.40/mt below the notional breakeven of $1,242.40/mt CFR China.
