Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene spot and contract prices in Europe were assessed unchanged on the week at $1,950/mt CFR NWE and $1,810/mt FD NWE respectively as a glut of supply in the markets balanced out rising feedstock prices. Producers and traders noted that a drop in ABS prices in Asia was pressuring prices in Europe. In Asia, spot prices fell $35/ mt week on week to be assessed at $1,590/mt CFR China and $1,590/mt CFR Southeast Asia, shrugging off a surge in the price of main feedstock styrene monomer. “A glut in supply in Europe currently is because of plants running at high operating rates in April and May,” a producer said. “There are large inventories of ABS” in Europe. Feedstock butadiene in Europe rose slowly this week following indications from Asia where the product was trading at a 19-month high over naphtha. Northwest European styrene monomer barges loading 5-30 days forward were assessed at $1,356.50/mt FOB ARA Wednesday, down $1/mt on the day.
