The Asian butadiene market jumped $60-$90/mt from the previous week as some spot demand was seen from South Korea and Taiwan amid steam cracker turnarounds. Trading sources said South Korea’s domestic butadiene price was hovering at an equivalent of $1,230-$1,240/mt CFR Korea amid tight supplies. As a result, South Korean butadiene producers were reluctant to export their spot cargoes currently as they were able to achieve higher prices by selling their cargoes in the domestic market, they added. Spot demand in Taiwan was also seen to be strong as Taiwan’s Formosa plans to shut its 109,000 mt/year No. 1 butadiene plant from June 8 for 40 days of annual maintenance.
