MEG demand continued to be characterized as strong this week, particularly from the anti-freeze sector, as participants talked of persistant shortages in availability. Tightness in the US market worsened following the landfall of Hurricane Isaac and the consequent force majeure announced by Shell at its Geismar, Louisiana, plant. As a result, sources continued to report increased activity in the spot market. "It's the most active I've seen in awhile. I'm getting a lot of inquiries but there is not much getting done as there is no product," said one source. Spot prices were talked notionally at 50-52 cents/lb, but sources said that buyers would likely have to pay a premium to get material and any parcels available would be small-volume fixtures.
