Some would say it has survived against all the odds. In 1980, one of its founder members, Iraq, invaded another, Iran, and for the next eight years the two fought a long and bloody war yet continued to participate in OPEC decision making. Ten years later, in August 1990, Iraq invaded Kuwait, another founder member.
