Along-awaited rig deal this month by Falkland player Desire Petroleum has reignited hopes for what will be the first drilling off the remote South Atlantic islands in 12 years. Desire has now inked a deal for Diamond Offshore's Ocean Guardian drilling rig to undertake a minimum four-well wildcat campaign in the North Falkland Basin. The Ocean Guardian is currently in the North Sea undergoing shipyard work and is expected to arrive in Falkland waters in early February 2010, Desire said this month. The company's shares jumped by up to 40% after the announcement in London and other explorers with interests in the Falklands gained on expectations they would benefit from a rig in the region.
